The chill and the kill

Who can say what particular occurrence is most likely to stimulate the gift of clairvoyance (or second-sight, or extra-sensory perception)? In the case of Rita Side the stimulus was inadvertently applied by the vicar of Marklane, who knocked her over with his old Bentley. Rita's attack of second-sight was spectacular: she could foretell the future with special reference to approaching death, and at moments she could read a stranger's whole past and future from just one glance. At once she was in demand as a seer, a fortune-teller, a social entertainer, a money-spinner and a popular freak. Journalists and crowds swarmed round the erstwhile tranquil village. Rita's mother was in despair although her grandfather, old Trinity Bend, rather enjoyed the hubbub. Of the many deaths foreseen by Rita one took place in Marklane itself, and it was undoubtedly murder. The search for, and discovery of, the murderer's identity provide an exciting conclusion to a series of bizarre and fascinating events.
